conditional formatting2

I understand the concept

would like to know if there is a way to "copy" down the conditional format
and have it pick up on the subsequent cell that needs to be looked at for the
condition

ie

cells a1 thru A100 all have values between 1-10

cells B1 thru B100 need to be red if the corresponding A1 thru A100 value
exceeds a given value(say 5)

is there a way i can have this conditional format apply globally....or do i
have to format each cell(B1 to B100) individually

hi
conditional formating can be copied down. in your formula just make sure
has relative references so that the paste will paste the corrosponding cell.
in B2 put as conditions =A2>5 then copy down.

sorry ...this is not clear........the conditional formatting is drop down
menu...there is nothing to put into cell B2

in the conditional fomatting window (for cell B2)...i can put in "cell
value", "greater than" and then point to cell A2

but when i copy the cell down....all cells are lookin at A2 to meet the
condition and change colour

Hi KCK,

You can accomplish what you want a number of ways but in all cases make sure
the appropriate cell references are relative.

1. You can highlight the entire range before you creata the conditional
formatting and then the whole range will be done with one command.
2. You can select the cell that has conditional formatting and click the
Format Painter tool and then highlight (paint) the range you want formatted.
3. You can select the cell that is conditioally formatted and double-click
the Painter tool and then press Shift+Ctrl+Down Arrow or Shift+Ctrl+Right
Arrow. This works if the range is contiguous.
4. You can choose Copy, then highlight the target range and choose Edit,
Paste Special, Format.

don't use "cell value". use "formula is"
formula is.....=A2>5.....pick your format.
copy down.
