Conditional Formatting

I want to apply conditional formatting to cells that are blank depending on
if other cells have text or numbers in them. For example:

If cells A1:A5 have text or numbers in them than cells D1:D5 must have
something in them. If they do not, then whatever cells in the range D1:D5
are blank, apply formatting.

Clear as mud? Thank you much!!

Use the condition

Formula Is =AND(A1<>"",d1="")
Pick some formatting

in Cell D1.

If you make sure that there are no absolute indicators (ie. $A$1) you can
use the format painter to copy this format to the other cells

Hi Paul - that worked great - thank you!

Next, is there a way to format text into cell d1 if it's formatted red?

For example, if cell D1 is formatted red because there's something in cell
A1 but nothing in D1 when required, can I add something like "MUST ENTER
INFORMATION HERE" along with the red fill?

Thx!!

Thx Paul C! That worked great!

Now, is there also a way to apply text formatting along with the color fill
in D1? Such as "MUST ENTER INFO HERE".

Thx!!!!

Conditional Formatting will only format cells, not add text.

The best you could do is put a formula in D1 that you would overwrite with
data.

Something like this would work

=IF(A1<>"","MUST ENTER INFO HERE","")

If someone entered data (thus deleting the formula) and then deleted the
data the MUST ENTER text would be gone, but the formatting would still be
there.
