I created a report and I am trying to use conditional formatting on an
expression. My expression show the variance between two numbers and I would
like the negative numbers to show in red and in brackets. I have read all
the strings, but I cannot find anything similiar. Thanks for your help.

You want brackets [123] around the negative number.
Usually it's parenthesis (123).
You don't need conditional formatting for this.

Set the Format property of the control to:

#[Black];\[#\][Red];0[Black]

See Access help on Format property + number and currency datatypes.
