computers don't see each other

Joe Fish

Hi,
I have two (actually three, but two I am using) computers connected
through a switch, sharing an internet connection. No matter what I have
tried, they don't see each other in My Network Places. Everything seems
compatible between them, the only strange thing is that computer A can
ping B but B can't ping A. This is the same whether the firewall is off
or on.

I know there are a thousand questions for this situation, but any ideas
anybody has are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,
Fish

Fish,

Please define "can't ping". Do you see name unknown, or 100% packet loss?

One of the most common causes of your problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, maybe one you're not aware of, or another security
component. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be the cause
of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

Or look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.
