computers coming online with same IP

I'm working on a network of 4 computers (all xp pro) which just added two
laptops.

They use a LAN through netgear switch to dsl modem (Cayman Netopia 3346) to
get on internet. Inside the LAN they use one of the computers as both a
server and a client for their specialty software. It uses UNC mapping.

It had been setup with static IP's for the 4 stationary computers. I talked
with the previous support person and he said he did that because one of the
computers used to be win98 and it didn't work well getting an auto assigned
IP.

I switched the system over to auto assigned so that the laptops could be
taken to hot spots and not have a problem. Everything works fine but I did
see one error due to two computers getting the same IP.

How can I prevent that from happening again????

Thanks

If twi computers have the same IP Address you still have one of them set
for staic IP not DHCP. DHCP will not assign the same address to two
different devices if they are using DHCP.

Or you have 2 DHCP servers running.

Release all IPs
Renew all IPs

See if it's OK.

not sure if this applies but an interesting article from linux-mag...
"On certain Windows PC's, such as those that use Broadcom or Intel
integrated NICs, disable the" TCP/IP Checksum" feature, otherwise it might
cause problems and you'll get duplicate IP address errors from within
CoLinux and won't be able to network to it properly."

missshelly to answer your question the ISP is not providing the workstation
with ip addresses. The router is and as such is a single dhcp source for the
lan.
