Computers cant see each other

I am trying to network a laptop which has XP Home with a desktop machine
with XP Pro on it and am having the following problem

I ran the networking wizard on both machines made sure they were in the same
workgroup (MSHome) and assigned permanent IP addresses of 192.168.0.1 and
192.168.0.2 respectively and on the desktop machine everything is fine. Well
that is to say I can see the laptop in My Network Places but I cant access
it. On the laptop there is nothing whatsoever in the My Network Places
folder and when I try to view Workgroup Computers it says there is nothing
to view and to contact the administrator to access the network.

Has anyone got any ideas how to cure this

Have seen a number of messages on this workgroup
suggesting that you shouldn't use static IP addresses. I
set up a network just using the networking wizard on host
and client, and the ip addresses were assigned for me,
the host always gets 192.168.0.1 and the client gets
another in the same range.

Hi...

as previously stated, you shouldn't use static IPs... use
the COMPUTER NAME and WORKGROUP IDs (Control
Panel/System/Identification.

Plus... if you're using a Netgear/MR814 router, it uses
192.168.0.1 as IT'S IP and the Linksys BEFSW41 (or
whatever) it uses 192.168.1.1. And don't forget to make
sure the router has DCHP set on and your PCs are set
to "Obtain IP and DNS addressing automatically".

Just a little footnote

The laptop which I want to set up as the client does not have anything in
the My Network Places when I thought it should have the list of its shared
folders. Does this mean the network is not set up correctly on the laptop

This brings up a larger question. The lack of sensory capabilities
amongst computers at the present state-of-the-art. Computers which
can't see one another can be compared to bacteria, or even lower. We
need HAL, but no monoliths. The most effective learning is produced by
the opposite of the monolithic approach. That is, not to be taught in
rote style as with them, but to constructivistically learn from trial
and error, evolution: blind variation/selective retention. Many
people think we're no longer evolving today (we're not, biologically),
but we're evolving explosively memetically, and the very same
evolutionary principles are driving it. We got to where we are today
by this method; the monoliths are really some kind of joke. (Besides,
intelligent aliens stay at home and communicate by radio). So it can
all be summed up by the following: "We don't need no stinking
monoliths."

Leaders will eventually become a thing of the past. When you have an
increasingly educated populace who are computer literate and know how
to get things done themselves, why do they need leaders?

Bush # 2 will rank in history alongside Millard Filmore, Warren G.
Harding, Benjamin Harrison, etc. Completely forgettable. It looks
bad now, but time will relegate him to the bucket of mediocre
Presidents. He'll be renown for starting a war to avenge his father
and grab oil, and letting no one stop him. I'm always amazed that
people want the job. Maybe for a future election no one will run. I
don't believe there's any provision for that. And the nation would be
the better for it, being run by self-organization alone.

Hey! Just heard (4:43 am CST) that Saddam has been captured! So this
means all the US's problems are over now for all time, right????? (5)
Let's go get drunk! Simple solutions to complex problems, the Leif
Robinson effect.
