computer wakeup

When I do not use my computer for a period of time, the
monitor shuts down. Clicking a key will wake it up. If
it is left unused for a longer period of time, the hard
drive shuts down. The start button glows red, Gateway
computer. Pressing the start button or clicking a key
will restart the hard drive, but the monitor remains
blank, nothing but a blinking curser in the upper left
hand corner. XP operating system.

What do I have to do to get windows desktop to come back
when it restarts? Second posting, but first try did not
get an answer.

Well it sounds like almost everything is perfect in your universe....except. Did you set up the power savings settings yourself? Perhaps you might go back into the Power Options setup screen and check what you have for settings. There will be wake/sleep settings for both monitor and disk, and separate settings for "Standby" and "Hybernate". You can't hurt anything by trying different settings. If all else fails, try default setting.
Cheers, hope it helps.

what i did was click Start>Settings>Control Panel[in classic view]on the Power Options icon i chose for the monitor to never shut off...you may have to adjust your power scheme if any conflicts
