Computer Turns on for a Second then Turns Itself Off

Hi, last night my computer froze so i turned it off...when I went to
switch it back on it wouldn't do anything...the fans and none of the
lights would turn on. I completely unplugged it from the outlet and
when I plugged it back in the computer fans and lights came on for
about one second and then turned back off. I have no idea why it's
doing this. Is there a problem with my power supply or motherboard?
What is the best way to figure out which component is giving it
problems? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Go to the newsgroup alt.hardware.comp and read the thread
entitled "power supply" and "computer turns off".

Look inside the case to make sure that the CPU fan is turning. Some motherboards will shut down
and refuse to boot unless they receive the tack signal from the CPU fan. If it is turning, try
another fan.

Are you getting any beep codes?

unplug everything from your power supply, hten power it up to see if

start.
If the power supply stays on then start connecting hardware items one
at a time, turning it own to see what is causing the shutdown.
try hardrive first.
Then if it starts to boot do the diskette drive and then power back
up, then the cdrom etc...
I've had this problem with bad secondary drives, diskette drives and
cdrom etc...
If it's the mobo about the only way to test that is swap it with a
known good one.

MOST of the time I have found this to be a PSU problem. It could be the CPU
fan, CPU itself or MB. If you have a spare PSU around, try that first.

First, try installing a known good quality power supply. If that doesn't
fix it, then you probably have a bad motherboard.
