Computer too slow

I have XP on my computer and it was running fine until 3 weeks ago. I'm
trying to find ways to optimize performance. I already defragmented the drive
and ran virus cleaning and all the features that come with system toos. Is
there anything else I can try to speed up my computer. It takes for ever to
start up and also to load a program. Sometimes when I double click on a
program to open it, it does not even respond. Then when I switch from one
program through the other through the bottom bar, the image seems to stick to
the screen and not go away. Any info will be greatly appreciated.
