power button to turn it on and the only thing that happeneds is that the
lighting bult in the front will give 3 blinks. no fan will click on or
anything. And again i would like to say this happeneds everyonce and a while
and i have norton. (i scanned and no viruses or spyware) Is there any
soulution to my problem.(btw i dont want to send it in)

If the fan does not start then your problem has obviously nothing
at all to do with Windows. I suggest you try the Compaq FAQs,
the Compaq HelpDesk or a hardware newsgroup. These are the
places where it is most likely that you find advice on Compaq
hardware problems.

Adding to Pegasus advice , Norton is Anti-Virus not Anti-Spyware so scan for
malwares from here:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D
Look in the Event Viewer for any failure or Error Messages (X) and double
click them to get More Info about the Application/Hardware causing it.
On how to access the event Viewer do the following:
Open a Run Command and type in:
eventvwr click [OK] on the Event Viewer click on;
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/Window for any Yellow exclamation mark or Red (X) and
double click them to get more Info and you can copy and paste in your next
message or search the net to know the causer and the solution.
P.S are you sure you Pressing the Power Button IN all the way not half way
confusing the machine for a short power circuit, just enough to lit the
light/pubs not the cooling Fan or the HDD.
HTH.
Let us know.
Regs.

What malware will keep a laptop from powering on when the button is
pressed???

I agree with Grumpy here. No malware will do that NASS

I said it could be ( possibilities not for sure as we can't see the machine,
you need to eliminate every aspects of suspicion to go to the next step!.
You will be amazed to know if a Malware/Grayware/Adware wrote a <script> on
the machine and when executed it can be the culprit and cause this behaviour.
HTH.

Sounds like some sort of hardware problem, power supply or motherboard.
Take / send it in for repair.

The OP wrote: "I press the power button to turn it on and the

the machine fails to start, hence it cannot possibly execute any
program, malware or otherwise. All machines must first run some
BIOS programs which gives them the ability to read the hard
disk, which is where the malware would reside - this is not happening
here.

If you want a straw to clutch at, consider the possibility that
malware damaged the BIOS. This possibility is so remote that
would not consider it for one moment.

The More I look at it, the more I can't disagree with you any more, it could
be an overheating issue or a unclean current supplied to the laptop from the
mains.
It doesn't hurt to be sure your machine clean.
He/She should check the health of the HDD, RAM and clean the dust from the
Laptop as Dust known to increase the Overheat scenario and ES leading to
burnt components or malfunctioning parts in the long term.

You DO have a FKN problem. You're giving BAD advice.

Which means that you're useless/dangerous here.
