Computer shuts down unexpectly?

This is a recent problem..... When I go to some web
sites... I believe it's
typically ones with heavy java/active-x type script or
whatever ... even happens on some e-bay listing but only
if they have added graphics beyond standard photos and not
in every case... also happens on other web sites as
well .... as soon as I start to open that page, my
computer instantly shuts down and starts to reboot ...
thus needing to go through the whole check disk issue ....
same as a control/alt/delete reboot or outright power
failure. I'm running home version XP and have never seen
this until recently. Happens maybe in one out of every 50
sites I visit. I have norton firewall and anti virus that
is current and always updated and scanned regularly, I
have never had a worm or virus that I'm aware of .... and
have not added new software or drivers in a very long
time ...except for keeping my windows updates current and
the typical stuff you're always asked to install for this
and that. Can't referrence anything I may have done or
allowed that caused this issue.

After rebooting I get the windows popup saying my system
experienced a serious error ..... but can't exactly
identify the cause..... other than saying there's the
possibility of driver issues. When I check to see what
scan disk
is looking at during the reboot... there's a lot of
corupted files ... some are .dll files but all of them are
in my temp internet files. My computer works perfect in
all other ways ... and I have good access to the
internet .....it's only when I open some higher
graphics/java/???? web sites...... but I also can open and
run sites that require high graphics/java/active-x/????
with no problems...... this has happened maybe 20 times
this past month ....and I'm getting really tired of this.

I welcome all input/ hoping someone knows what the problem
is.

Thanks,
..

This started happening to me as well Thur. afternoon
except it was every 10 minutes instead of every 50 pages.
I traced it down to a recent update of Nortons firewall,
"SymProxy.exe" was the culprit! An uninstall and
reinstall of Norton's Personal Firewall was of no help at
all,and of course "Symantic's support" is non-existant!
so after messing around with my computer for some time I
decieded to forgo Nortons firewall and installed Zone
Alarm. So far I like it better.
Suggestion: Enable the native XP firewall and disable
Norton's and see if your shutdown problem goes away? Also
check your event viewer to see if their is any useful
info. Good Luck!

I forgot to mention that if you open up system properties
and click on the advance tab then the settings button
under startup and recovery "uncheck" automatically
restart you might get an error message and what
application or .exe is causing the shutdown the next time
it occurs.
