Help my windows xp home computer shuts down on its own. A
box will pop up and say computer will restart in 55
seconds. I can't get it to stop and if I try to go on
line and do downloads I'm not able to it just shuts down.
I have been told its the basser virus, but can't fit a
patch to get to fix it. Any ideas on what it might be.
It's either the Blaster or Sasser Worm
As soon as you get the message that windows is going to shut down, go to
Start - Run, and type in "shutdown -a" (without the quotes), hit Enter.
This will abort the shutdown.
Next, turn on your XP firewall.
Control Panel... Network Settings, then right click the connection you're
using to access the internet. Pick Properties, then the Advanced Tab.
Check the box that says "Protect my computer...."
Then go on the internet and download and install the Microsoft Security
patch at

You may have to restart your computer.
Then download the following two files from Symantec. I would say just
download them to your desktop so they'll be easy to find.
Then run the two files. Each one takes quite a bit of time, but it'll
give you the results when it is done. I always run them in Safe Mode but
I think you can run them OK in Normal mode.

This should take care of your immediate problem. I'd highly suggest
updating your anti virus definitions and running a full system scan right
away.
Hope this helps.
