Matt

I leave my computer on all the time, and several times
now when I have gone to it in the morning my computer is
shut off. Now it only shuts down at night, never during
the day. It never used to do this when I first bought
the computer, but then it started doing it once a week or
so, totally random.

HELP!

What do your event logs tell you?

Sorry, no email replies. Ask in a group, read the answer there. Note -
posting your valid e-mail address in a newsgroup post, or in your news
account settings, is a surefire way to get spam and SWEN and other viruses
sent to you....see http://www.mailmsg.com/SPAM_munging.htm for help in the
future, but note that now that your address is out there, there's not much
you can do other than changing your address.

Where do I check my event logs at?? What should I be
looking for?

Thanks for the advice, that email account is being
discontinued in 30days anyways, so thats why I used it.
Thanks!

I searched through past threads, and the only thing i
found was to uncheck the automatic restart if there is a
problem, well that was already unchecked on my computer.
So I'm lost. Reminder: it shuts down and stays off, it
doesn't just restart.

You will find the Event Viewer in the Administrative Tools applet in
Control Panel. It sounds like you are having hardware issues, possibly
overheating or a failing power supply. Here are some generic hardware
troubleshooting steps:

1) open the computer and run it open, cleaning out all dust bunnies and
observing all fans (overheating will cause system freezing); 2) test
the RAM - I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - let the test run
for an extended (like overnight) period of time - unless errors are
seen immediately; 3) test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from
the mftr.; 4) the power supply may be going bad or be inadequate for
the devices you have in the system - you can try swapping it out with a
known-good one; 5) test the motherboard with something like TuffTest
from www.tufftest.com. Testing hardware failures often involves
swapping out suspected parts with known-good parts. If you can't do the
testing yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your computer, take
the machine to a good local computer repair shop (not a CompUSA or Best
Buy type of store).

To get to the event viewer, go to Control Panel|Administrative
Tools|Event Viewer and look for a system event that coincides with the
crash time.

Thanks for all of the tips!! I'll have to try it this
weekend. If those things don't lead me anywhere, what do
I do? I think that it overheating could def. be a
possibility. Thanks again!

So if I do have more problems, how do I get ahold of you?
Thanks!

Just come back to the newsgroup! Here is some information about
newsgroups:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you
learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows,
but you can use Outlook Express since you already have it. Here are
some links to information about newsgroups to broaden your posting
pleasure!

I had this problem. It was a virus and it brought up a little widow that
said it was going to shut down in about a minute. The timing of the message
was variable. My virus program got rid of it. Have you got all the latest
patches from Microsoft? If not, these might help you to avoid it.
