Computer not recognizing new RAM

A

annabruce

I have a rather new Emachines. I added a 256 memory chip
(same bus speed as the already installed 128 chip). I
have tried putting the new chip in the first slot, with
the smaller chip in the second slot and visa versa. My
computer only recognizes the 128 MB chip. Any
suggestions?

Is the memory seated properly? Does the bios recognize it when you start
up? The memory could be faulty.

Hi,

You may need to use either (2) 128 or (2) 256 chips when
filling the slots, ie matched pairs. Does the 256 work by
itself?

Greetings --

It's either defective, sub-standard, or incompatible RAM.

It's absolutely essential that any new RAM module be compatible
with both the motherboard and any other RAM module(s) in the system.
Additionally, there are sometimes jumper switches on older
motherboards that need to be reset for the new RAM configuration.
Consult your motherboard's manual.
