computer not booting

a few days ago, a freind brought over a computer for me to add a new
sound card in it. I have not had a chance to put the card in yet and was
trying to do some hardrive maintenance i'e virus scan, scandisk, derag
etc. I was in the BIOS and changed a few things , but now I can't get
Windows to boot. I was booting fine when the computer was brought over.
I have gone back into the BIOS and changed back the things I have
changed but no luck yet. When the system boots, I get past POST then a
message telling me that the system was not shut down properly and gives
me 4 choices on how to boot. I have tried them all. If I select
safemode, I get lines that are showing me what is bieng loaded etc. then
stops on mup.sys.

If I boot normally, I will get the white progress bar to go all the way
to the right then thats it. The Computer will not go any further. All
the boot modes have the same results every time.

Is there anything I can do without reformatting ?

unfortunately, I go both ways to get the repair option and it wants an admin
password or cd-key ...

Most BIOS have an option to reset to default or to very conservative
"safe settings"

If this is Windows XP, you could boot to an XP installation disc, and
would have several options from there, including a repair installation.
