Computer no longer boots without help

Equipment is a less-than-year-old custom computer running Vista Home Premium
with an otherwise simple but standard installation of software and hardware.
It has performed excellently until recently. Without warning the system now
fails to boot without first unplugging our Huawei modem. With modem plugged
in the usual splash screen appears then the mysterious two-letter codes
lower-right of screen. At "EB" it stalls. At one time a message something
like, "equipment recently plugged in or unplugged should be restored ... "
etc. But it did not say how to fix the problem for good. By elimination I
found that it was the modem that needed to be unplugged. Any answers?

Hi, Spodge,

Occasionally , my modem fails to lock into the web,
The fix is to remove the power supply and wait for 1 minute before plugging
back in.
It then re-installs itself and works fine for a month or two.
