Computer name changed but can still ping to old name.

I have a Windows 2000 server network with AD.

Here is my problem:

I am deploying a new RIS image to my machines. Before deploying an image t
a machine, I delete it's account from the AD so no conflicts will occur with
the new machine. This has worked very well for 90% of the machines I have
done.

ONe of the machines, we will call it Machine-X, was deleted from the AD in
preparation to be imaged. After deploying the new image, I named the machine
Machine-Y and added it to the AD.

I can now ping the old name (Machine-X) as well as the new name (Machine-Y).
Both names return the same IP. Doing a tracert on the IP address returns
the name Machine-Y.

Why can I still ping to both names?

Thanks.

Because the old name hasn't been removed from DNS or WINS or both.

Hi Joe.

Thanks for the quick response. It is in WINS, but since we don't have a
WINS server here, I guess we'll just have to wait for it to clear on it's own.
