Computer is Frozen

I had downloaded the XP Service Pack a couple of weeks earler. The other day
there was an a automatic notice that I needed to download an update from
Microsoft. I clicked to update and the screen went to the shut down mode and
a message said 'do not shut down or unplug your computer - it will shut off
automatically - updating 1 of 1'. After 12 hours, it was still saying the
same thing. I tried to shut it off and it will not shut down....Help!

I did try to shut down and I pulled the plug....it's a laptop and when I
opened it again it was still saying the same. ...this was after over 12
hours. I am out of town so don't know if it is still on but wanted to try and
get some answers before I return as I live out of the country where it is
difficult to get your computer serviced.
