ok i tryed to use restore disks from my desktop on my laptop and it
didnt exactly work it stopped half way through and now when i try to
reinstall its old operating system which was windows 98 and it says an
error was detected while formatting your primary hard disk partition
so i know what i did was compleltley stupid in the first place so can
anyone give me a hand and tell me what i should do before im killed
for breaking my laptop

Opps - First, Absolute rule in this situation is to GO SLOW ! making
any kind of hasty/random actions can make an already bad situation a
lot worse.

Your desktop restore disks, where they Windows XP or 98 ? Does
the laptop have a recovery disk set or a hidden partition ? It might help
to repost with the Vendor/Model # of the notebook. An inability to do
a format is a serious issue and you may need some professional help to
get the notebook restored.

OEM stuff is too lame to do the whole thing over an existing system is
it not?

Perhaps a complete reformat would do the trick?

How are you trying to reinstall windows 98? FYI there is a windows 98
newsgroup.

Your tip missed the portion where he said he didn't have the recovery cd's
for his laptop.

further response at the bottom of this post.

Check page 125 of the Reference manual for the notebook:

Since you don't have the recovery cd's I suggest you bite the bullet and
take it to a qualified repair shop and have them fix it.
Since the hardware appears to be too old for XP, you just might be able to
find a copy of w98 on e-bay , good luck.

Sorry but that doesn't explain it. What kind of copy? Installation CD?
Image file? Backup? How are you using this "copy"? And again it's best to
post to a windows 98 newsgroup.

Thanks to R. McCarty for providing the online manual. It talks about
that it can run Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. Page 8 and 13
for starters.

Better yet... what was installed on this laptop before you messed up? As
it appears it could come with Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
(thanks to R. McCarty for providing the manual). Does it have a
Microsoft Windows sticker on it? If so, which Windows does it say for?
And if the key is provided, you are in luck.

A sticker that says Microsoft Windows and has a long number separated
by dashes, in a similar format to: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXX. This
is often on the bottom of laptop computers.

ok i found it its g8kt9-f9kk3-dwrkp-wpwyb-fw7kq

Uh..you shouldn't post it online. Besides people knowing the product key
isn't going to help you.

oh well my bad now how is this going to help me exactly

You really should post to a Windows 98 group for guidance with your project.
Use the General Discussion group -- microsoft.windows.win98.gen_discussion

I and many other well qualified people will be waiting for you.
