Computer hangs on startup

My computer is hanging on bootup. It hangs when Verifying DMI Pool Data. If
I go into setup to check the bios the keyboard quits responding after approx
5 seconds. I have changed keyboards and the same result appears. The
system screen displays all drives and memory are responding.

When I start the computer with the XP CD it gets to a blue
screen and at the bottom it says Setup is Starting Windows and hangs. Now
it won't even start with the CD.

I am running WinXP and the processor is a 1.7 Athalon.

Could this be an OS, mother board or hard drive problem?? The hard drive
is recognized at boot up.

Thanks
Shayne

Hi,

Sounds like a motherboard problem. Open the system case, use a flashlight
and look at the capacitors. I would suspect some of them are leaking, and
the board may be a candidate for replacement.

Shayne - Just seen this post. I may be too late with this response, but it
might just avoid you taking drastic measures. I had a similar problem and
after a LOT of searching I found the solution was my little motherboard
battery needed changing. Might be worth trying for sake of a couple of pounds?

Hope it helps
