Does anyone have any idea what would make my 3 week old machine "hang" (the
cpu runs but doesn't perform any action...it just won't budge, forcing a
restart) when I right-click something on the desktop - for example to empty
the recycle bin, delete a file, etc. This is happening out of the blue and I
have no idea why. Amy thoughts or suggestions would be wonderful!

Thanks!

So far the handful of "disables" I have tried havent worked..but I'm going
through them all. Any chance my problem could be related to this error
message that pops up before the desktop loads upon booting my comp.?

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime error!

ProgramL c:\program files\common files\updmgr\updmgr.exe

The application has requested Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way,
please contact the application's support team for help.

I also just noticed on my last Task Manager shut down and reboot cycle that
Wndows is having trouble shutting down explorer.exe.

Just trying to give you all all of the information you might need.

Thanks!

You don't need to reinstall explorer. Download all these spyware removal tools,*update* them and run a scan.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
SpyBot S&D - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder : http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe

do i need to just reinstall explorer.exe? if so, how/ where?

i've got the first two and keep them updated and run regularly...and i've
run them repeatedly tonight to clear this up. i'm going thru deleting the
..dll's etc for the program, but i cant delete the files because Explorer
hangs whenever I try to move them, click on File to delete them or right
click to use the pop up menu.

Update:

- all 3 spyware tools updated run and are showing the machine as clean
- all steps on the page you pointed me to have been followed as much as
applied to my machine, with the exception of deleting the files and removing
the directories because I have no way of removing them without making the
machine "hang,"

So...the original problem remains....unless I am forgetting a crucial step
or I've missed something....
