Computer hangs at startup-shows black screen

i recently experienced a power failure while using my computer. when i
started it up again, the computer would display a black screen and hang after
the Windows logo w/ the bar showing a pattern moving across it, just before
the logon screen is supposed to show up. i tried using a boot floppy and got
the same black screen. i tried booting from the windows cd, but it would hang
at the setup screen, before loading any drivers. i even tried booting from
knoppix, but it didn't work. i'm not sure what other info i should include.

so basically, the question is: how do i get my computer working again?

Thanks for responsding but i already looked at that help page. My problem is
a little different, the black screen comes after the windows logo, not before
it. i did try what it suggested, using a boot disk, but it didnt work.

I have tried the Windows XP Setup and it goes through all the steps to
reinstall (or repair, when I selected that option) but the result is always
the black screen and pointer. Since I can't run my virus program, I am
hesitant to try any of the Recovery Console steps.
