Computer freezes when openning Internet Explorer

When I attempt to open Internet Explorer for the first
time during a Windows session, the computer, with Windows
XP Pro OS, freezes up for approximately 5 minutes. This
even happens when I have "about:blank" as my default home
page. What can I do to resolve this?
