Other than formatting the hard drive.

Other than formatting the hard drive.

Formatting is not a good solution; data can still be recovered from a
formatted drive.

You might look into Eraser, a freeware data destruction tool which has
several different erasing algorithms, including DoD and Gutmann.

Depending on how paranoid you are, a few minutes at 2000°F with a
blowtorch on the hard disk platters should do the trick.

I had thought of that!

Try HDCleaner. It has all sorts of tools to shred and remove history and
stuff. I guess it's that "stuff" that you want to remove.

Many thanks to you all.
I've downloaded Eraser but not yet installed it.
I will look for HDCleaner and download it now.

I use ClearBat from here http://www.geocities.com/sheppola/freeprog.html
It does a thorough job, I found that deleting Temp Internet Files from IE
still
left piles of junk, ClearBat gets them all.
(Note that if the path to the temp files is different, edit the batch file)
Newsgroups use .dbx files, use "Find " to get to the location on your hard
drive.
Delete any dbx files for NG's you have visited. This will only remove them
from
casual view, if Interpol are after you, sterner measures are called for! :)
