Compressed (zipped) Folder Utility

I cannot find a component to add/enable the Windows compressed folder
utility. Does one exist or must I simply install a third party utility on to
all my images?

Sean,
I think you provide a great resource by answering questions such as this but
my question is how does MS suppose that one can answer this question for
him/herself? An alternate construction of my question is how were you able
to answer the OP?

I think my point relates to what Mike Warren has been saying in recent posts
about the "black box" nature of XPe and the "support situation." As I
understand it even your book is no longer available so one is left to this
newsgroup and MSDN and unfortunately both are spotty.

Hello,

I was able to find the "lz32.dl"l file but I cannot find the component
"Shell Namespace Extensions" or anything close to that name.

Hi again,

Please disregard my last post. I had to adjust the visibility setting in
order to find the "Shell Namespace Extensions" component.

Thanks as always for the valuable help!

OS specific features correlated to specific components are popular
questions. I know it is a challenge since the OS is broken down into over
11,000 components. I am able to answer based on past experience running into
the same problem. In the past, there were a number of MVPs answer questions
in the newsgroup, which made it easy for anyone to ask.

The online help that comes with WES/XPe has the answers, but getting the
right answer is in asking the right search questions. Having worked with the
tools since 2002, my quirky mind is able to figure some of this out. In the
case, I searched on ZIP and compression to find lz32.dll, which I remember I
had to add to one project to get compression working.

If the help doesn't work, I also use the tools (SLDX Assistant) my company
developed to compare a small image to a full WES/XPE XP Pro like image. With
the a comparison, one can isolate the missing components / features.Again,
no small task and it takes some work.

My books are still available as my company acquired RTC Books/Annabooks last
year. We just don't have them listed on Amazon anymore.

Hi,

I installed the two items you suggested and now I can unzip folders and
files with no problem. However, I cannot zip them up. When I select "send
to > zip folder" on the menu, absolutely nothing happens. No event is
recorded in Event Viewer either.

There must be something else that I have to add to make this fully functional.

thanks again,

I'm still having issues with this Compressed Folder Utility.

When I create a zipped folder on a XP Pro system and copy the zipped folder
to my Embedded device, I can extract the folder without a problem.

However, when I try to zip up fiels by selecting Send To > Compressed
(zipped folder), nothing happens. No folder gets created, no error, nothing.

When I select New > Zipped folder from the menu, a zipped folder gets
created, but I am unable to copy any files into the folder (cut and paste or
drag and drop).

It seems as though the executible for this utility or some other file is
still missing. I tried adding the COMPACT.EXE (Misc. NTFS Tools component)
file to the image but that didn't help. I verified that the zipfldr.dll file
is in the SYSTEM32 folder. I even compared the registry entries for this
file with a working XP Pro system and it looks the same.

Does anyone know if there is an executible for this utility?

I am about to give up - unless someone has any other ideas/suggestions???

If not, I'll just have to add some third-party utility to the image (which I
am not crazy about doing).

thanks again,
