Compressed files

I have XP, SP3:-
If I create a compressed folder on my external hard drive - and then copy
and compress my files into that folder - as a way to back up up the files on
my internal hard drive -
Will I be able to open and use those files with another operating system
later - say for example - Vista???

Should be no problem
