Compress old files

Is there any good reason for compressing old files - unless the hard disk is
getting full at which time the user should be thinking of getting another
hard disk anyway?

No. The only reason is to save disk space.

I'm with you entirely. If you are that close to running out of space that
you need to compress files, it will be at most a stopgap measure. You'll
need a bigger drive very soon anyway, and I would rather get it sooner than
compress files.
