Hi, i wondered if anyone could help me. i currently have Windows XP pro, and
am looking to upgrade to Vista. Is it true that i will not be able to install
Vista Basic, becasue this is downgrading. If this is the case, will i be able
to install Vista Home Premium onto my computer where i currently have XP Pro.
Thank You.

to clarify.. clean install is like this:

you buy the upgrade version of the vista you want,
you start your computer with XP and stick in the vista dvd.. it asks you if
you want to install vista
and you follow the directions.. in this case a clean install means it will
erase all the old files and install
a clean version of vista...

while upgrade means it will retain you installed programs and files..

but if you ask me.. a clean install is always better.. since there is no
trash left back from the previous install...
of course you will have to backup your files before you do this...

You can install Vista Home Basic, but only cleanly, not as an upgrade.

becasue this is downgrading.

Correct.

Again, you can only install it cleanly, not as an upgrade.

You can upgrade from XP Professional to Vista Business or Vista
Ultimate only. See

you can clean install from xp pro to any vista
but upgrade only to business and ultimate
Now was this a technical thingy or a marketing thingy on Microsoft's part?
Let me guess ... hmmmm, knowing Microsoft, it was all about their profits
at the expense of their user base.

Doris

So you can then put back all your trash on your new Fista system. :-)

Hi Liz,

What T has written here is the correct way to go about installing Vista, but
if I can make a suggestion.
If you haven't installed Vista before why not install it as a dual boot
setup ( when installing Vista select "custom" and you can install it on a
seperate partition. This way you can have a look at Vista, have a play around
but still be able to use XP. If after a while you decide to switch to Vista
you can then carry out T's instructions and have Vista as a stand alone O/S.

As always, make sure that your computer is capable of handling Vista thus
saving you heaps of problems.

theoretically that is illegal....and against the MS EULA

since if you buy the upgrade version you can only have ONE functioning OS on
a computer,
in this case vista that replaces XP, and not both,
even if you dont use them at the same time!
I know its stupid but hey its microsoft....
