Compacting

I am having a problem compacting one of the data bases for
work. It appears compaction is running fine until it hits
about the half way point then just sits there and does not
progress any further.

Any help or advices would be appreciated. Oh, Access 2k.

How big is the database? If it's quite large, you may have to wait a while.

Something else to try if you're really in a jam: import everything into a
new db.

It is at about 75 meg currently. I do not recall what size
it was 2 weeks ago when I first attempted to compact it. I
will give it 30 minutes or so and see if it runs through,
if ot I will dump it to another DB.

Thanks for the help!!!

I have had Mdb's @ 1gb! I sometimes made the error of quitting during a
compact as the OS said that the application was not responding.
This action unfortunately crashed the indexes (but luckily I had a backup!)
The "not responding" on an Access is basically bullshit, apparently if
some calls are not answered it assumes its not responding even though it
is actually working away.

What I did was set it running at 5pm and left it overnight. Low and
behold it worked, but how long it took I am not sure (have a life
outside work..!)

So, try running it at night (backup of course) and leave it even if the
OS claims the application is not responding. When it is done you will
find it will compact much faster in the future.

Hope this helps

Rich
