Compacting issue after installing SP3

Prior to installing SP3, when I would compact a database that I had
open, I received no prompt to enter a different file name, it just
overwrote the old database. This was fine. It wasn't what I expected
when I first did it, but it was fine.

After installing SP3, Access still doesn't prompt me for a new name,
it just goes ahead and puts the compacted version in a database called
db1.mdb or db2.mdb, etc. depending upon what exists already. Right
after the compact, Access doesn't open the newly compacted version,
but the old uncompacted one. When I try to compact a database that
isn't open, I get a prompt to give the compacted version a new name,
which I enter as the current name. Not only does it not overwrite the
old version (still puts it in db1.mdb), it doubles the size of the
database with the old name. Sort of reverse compacting.

I appear to be unable to roll back my system with system restore, so
any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Sue

I've seen this behavior intermittently since long before SP3, except I
always get prompted for a new name when it happens. I don't know if it will
help in your case, but I found that the problem almost always occurred when
I opened the db by double-clicking it in Windows Explorer. If I opened
Access and then opened the db from within Access, the Compact/Repair almost
always worked as expected.

I was hopeful that perhaps this would work, but unfortunately I got
the same behavior. Dang! Thanks for posting.
