I have the second question about compacting files... even with all of my
old files backed up and removed from OE, it still tries to backup my files
and it still is slow even with just a few e-mails... why would they put
that AUTOMATIC feature in there? Is there any way to remove this compact
so-called feature even if it means going into regedit?

WinXP SP2?

Compacting has nothing whatsoever to do with backing up OE data (nor does it
back it up). It merely removes wasted, unused space in your message store,
making OE more efficient and reliable.

In SP2, Windows will prompt you to perform a manual compact (or do it for
you) if you have not compacted before closing OE the last 100 times. The OE
team added this because so many OE users hadn't been compacting and were
losing their messages and message store. (Yes, once again Microsoft chooses
to protect you from your own bad habits.)

Unless you don't mind the very real risk of losing all of your messages, you
shouldn't want to disable it. I would advise users to perform a manual
compact at least once-a-week. See this page:
