When I shut down the mail I am asked if I want to compact the database and
when I click on ok, it tells me it is being used by another program. I am
concerned that if it cannot be cleaned up that windows mail will become
bogged down and not work. I have no other programs open when this happens.
Does anyone have a solution please?

Thankyou.

Which antivirus are you running? Some are not very compatible
with Windows Mail, and will cause assorted problems like this.

One other thing to try. Open Windows Mail, and without doing
anything in it, close the program. This may allow a successful
compaction.

Try starting Windows Mail, then immediately shutting it down and choosing
the compact the database option. If this doesn't help, you may need to
disable your antivirus program, then try it again.

If the other suggestions fail, try my Windows Mail utility to compact and
repair the database. Then when WinMail closes again, when it prompts you,
it may not generate the error.

Also, when you close WinMail, make sure that no other message windows are
open and that you don't have any mail gadgets on the sidebar.
