For a shared database if you set Access to automatically Compact and Repair
on Close does it only do so when the last person in the database closes (i.e.
when the Access Lock file closes).

Hi, John.

on Close does it only do so when the last person in the database closes

Yes. If Access attempts to compact the database when someone else has it
open, the compaction will fail. However, with a split database, this doesn't
affect the front end because no one else will be sharing the front end, since
every user should have a copy of the front end on his own workstation.
Compact on Close will only affect the back end if this option is set on the
back end database file, and only when the last person closes the back end of
the database.
