Compact on Close Access 97

I know that all the newer versions of Access offer a compact on close
function. Is it possible for Access 97 to do so and is it necessary?
 
A97 does not have a compact-on-close option.

IME, compact on close is not desirable if you know what you are doing and
look after your databases.
