compact and repair suddently requires unknown password

For some strange reason (that I hope someone can explain and fix), every time
I compact and repair my database it now requires a password. Unfortunately,
this is a different password required than the one that I have set up. As a
result, now I can't compact and repair and my database is growing rapidly!

PLEASE HELP!

sounds like corruption.
Create a new blank database, import all objects from bad copy. Compact
and repair.
