Compact and Repair corrupts database

You might have two access application on your computer
Access 97
Access 2003 or else

if you created the DB with Access 2003 and you trying to
compact with Access 97 that the error you get.
 
It shouldnt
you can have mistakes in your code, and it will still let
you compact.

but try to move to your previous DB before the changes (if
you have), and try step by step.
sorry I can't help, its hard without seen it.
