Compability Mode

After opening a saved document - what does [Compability Mode] mean? Plus - I
am missing more than half of the original document.
 
Compatibility Mode means that your document is set so that it can be opened
and worked on in more than one version of Word / Excel / PowerPoint.

Is it possible that the missing parts are actually hidden? In the Paragraph
Group on the Home tab, click the Show/Hide command or you can press CTRL+*
to display hidden text and non printing characters.
