Commputer 1 and Computer 2

Hello,

we have two computers hooked up to a DSL port. Somehow, one computer,
the main one, can no longer access the server or network. No e-mails,
no internet. It won't connect although it was doing so last night when
it was cut off. It doesn't have dial-up, it stays "on" throughout the
night evidentally. But the second computer can still get on the
internet. It works fine.

Question: How come the first computer cannot access the internet while
the second one can? Somehow, the user of the second computer somehow
either infected the first computer or deleted some files from the
first computer without using the first computer. How does this happen?
Through the DSL connection? The first computer cannot find the server
but the second one can.

We have tried different things to find the problem but have failed so
far. But more importantly, it is crucial the same mistake is not made
in the future with someone else's DSL hookup. How does the second
computer foul up the first computer so it cannot gain internet access?

I am a novice and will appreciate any comments, thanks!
