common "outlook.pst" for desktop and laptop

I use outlook on both my destop and my laptop. Both computers use the same
default "outlook.pst" folder, located in a "briefcase" type directory.

When I switch to my laptop and download email from my ISP server, all
messages retain on the server are again downloaded, causing duplicate emails
to appear.

Is there a way to eliminate this duplication other than deleting the server
emails already downloaded to my desktop?

No, since you switch them between computers they don't know that the other
computer already downloaded them.
