Commercial Software Compatability Problem.

Hi all,

I have a lady friend whose running Vista Home Premium on a new Gateway
desktop system. Lately, she's been experiencing a Runtime error while
running up to 5 applications, including JASC ( now part of Corel) Paintshop
Pro 7.02 She gets a Runtime error message in PSPS stating that the program
was closed in an unexpected way, and then her system locks up - forcing a
hard reboot.

Off the top of my head, I figure it might be two things: 1. Version of the
product, and/or 2. Misconfigured program compatability issue.

While Paintshop Pro 7.02 was designed to run on Windows9x versions up to
XP - it had some functionality bugs that could make it unstable. These
weren't ironed out until later on in its 7.04 product release, which I have
the update for and will get to her.

In the meantime, I've walked her through changing the compatibility settings
for PSP.Exe - from Vista to XP - in order to determine if this might
correct the runtime error issue, or produce a different kind of error. It
still closes unexpectedly, although this time it didn't lock up her
computer. Nothing was in Application events, so now Im thinking - If I had
her look in System events for this Runtime error issue - how should it be
listed there?

Hi CJ.

My "old" PSP7 gave me so much trouble when I bought a new XP machine
that I went on ebay and bought a PSP8 after which I had no problems
at all even after installing SP1 and 2.

About a month ago I installed the PSP8 on my new Vista machine and
since then I have tried just about everything the software does (it's
one of my favorite/useful programs) and it appears to me to work
fine. EXCEPT for one small problem: The screen-capture function adds
"transparency" to whatever I try to capture; by transparency I mean
that regradless how many programs are running and maximized, the
capture process captures your desktop, in other words, the "bottom
page". Sorry, but I can't explain it any other way; I'm an old
geezer and not too good at this. I had to buy a third-party capture
software which works fine. HTH.

Thanks for your reply Tony... I'm using a cracked version of Try and buy for
PSP 8. 10. I've heard horror stories about Vista being smart enough to
disable use or access to what it sees as a pirated program and I'd rather
not see her go there. LOL

I'll make that suggestion to my lady friend, to search Ebay for a copy of
PSP 7.04 or 8.10 (most stable build of 8) that someone wants to sell.

Check out the newsgroup for PSP7. I just went there
(corel.PaintShopPro_older_versions) and saw a post for a PSP 7.04 Runtime
error. It mentioned a utility from Corel
(ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/PaintShopPro/X/) called ZapPS that the poster
claimed fixed the problem.

I had trouble getting PSPX to run with Vista until I installed it under
WinXP compatibilty mode. It still wasn't quite stable so I upgraded to PSPXI
and it runs fine.

Ohh so corel is aware of the problem then. Okay, I will suggest both options
to my friend.

Thanks for replying.
