Commenting on comments

Hari

Hi,

I have a sheet in which some of the cells are protected and some are left
unlocked so that those cells could be edited.

I have some comments in the protected cells which I want the users of the
sheet to be able to read them. I have not kept the same to "show comment"
as the comment is quite big and it will come in the way of some cells in
which data is to be entered.

I have 2002 and I have not checked "edit objects" in protection as I dont
want anybody to insert comments in unprotected cells.

So, is there some way users of this sheet can read the comments in the
protected cells but not able to edit them and also at the same time are not
able to insert any new comments in the unprotected cells.

Hari,

Comments may not be added nor existing comments edited in unlocked cells if
you don't have Edit Objects selected. XL2002 English.

I'm not sure what you mean by this:

Hi Earl,

Thanx for ur reply.

Just to clarify my previous query. I want that users of the worksheet are
able to view the comments in the protected cells by using the "show comment"
option. I have not already kept the comments open because there are some
unprotected cells also nearby and they will come in the way.

Hence, what I want is that users should not able to insert new comments or
edit the existing comments. But I want them to have the ability to view the
comments which are there in the protected cells.

So you protected the worksheet and
turned Tools|options|View Tab|Comments to None.

Can you teach them to toggle that comment indicator to either of the other two
options?

I like to leave it comment indicator only and then the comment will only appear
when your cursor lingers over the cell.

Hi Dave,

Thanx a lot for the reply.

I have my "Tools|options|View Tab|" set to comment indicator only.

The problem that was happening is that when I used to keep the cursor in the
protected cell having comment then the comment wouldnt show up
automatically.
I have to use right click and then do show comment.

Hence, I wanted to know whether it is a normal behaviour. ( That is comments
in protected cell not showing up when we move the cursor there.)

For me, the comment appears not when I click in the cell, but when I let the
cursor hover above the cell.

In fact, if I'm quick, I can click on the cell and keep the comment from
appearing (same thing if I use the arrow keys on the keyboard).

And if I just let the cursor hover over the cell (with or without selecting it),
the comment appears.

This was with the "comment indicator only" set.

You sure it's a comment? There is another "information bubble" that can pop up
when you select a cell.

It's created via Data|Validation|Input message tab

ps. I'm using xl2002, but I believe the comments have behaved this way for a
lonnnnnnnggggg time.

Hi Dave,

Thnx a lot for persisting with this thread.

Im sorry, I actually wanted to write that im hovering my mouse cursor over
the cell. Normally when I hover over the cell then comment shows up.
But in this case the cell having the comment is locked and sheet is also
protected. When I hover the mouse cursor over the cell the comment doesnt
show up automatically. For making the comment show up I have to right click
on the cell with mouse button and then choose "show comment".

Hence, I wanted to know whether its a normal behaviour of comment not
automatically showing up in locked cells ( sheet is protected )

( For clarification...I am not talking about the input information which
comes in data validation )

I can't duplicate this.

Can you create a small workbook with only a couple of comments in a worksheet.
Set the protection the same as you're using on the real worksheet/workbook.

I don't really have any other guess.

(Well, one more...If your worksheet has lots of comments in them, can you delete
most and test that? Don't save this workbook--you don't want to lose your
work.)
