Hi

I'm trying the 'turn off explorer.exe' and delete from Command Prompt
method of getting rid of some files which are polluting some folders -
it's some left overs from a SP² install - sp²+recycler+other stuff which
just refuses
to be thrown out.

My question is : does anyone have an idea where I can find a good site
explaining how
to use Command Prompt, how to get to the file I want to delete and how to
delete it,
because when I enter the file path I believe to be the right one the answer
comes back saying
it can't be found, and I've been on this for hours now. Systematically the
files can't be found so I must be doing something wrong...

Thanks for any help,

Trinidad

The file system may be damaged or corrupt. After backup you might try
running;
chkdsk /r
from the recovery console command line. (/r implies /f and /p)

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows XP
CD-Rom. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows
XP installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%

Also you can try deleting from the recovery console. First you'll need to;

Control Panel|Admin Tools|Local Security Policy Recovery console:
"Allow floppy copy and access to all drives/folders" set to 'Enabled'

Then from the recovery console command line;
SET allowallpaths = TRUE

to gain access to all folders and try deleting from here.

Thanks for any help,

Some of the files that you are wanting to delete are Windows System
Files. Windows will not run without them. If you are running out of disk
space, buy a bigger hard drive.

Ok

Good morning,

Problem with the procedure you indicated -
my CDROM - I can't get into recovery mode for some reason,
the undeleteable files are reproducing, I have them on my :F drive
which is an external usb stock drive - I guess that doesn't make it
any easier to get rid of them ...

Any different method of doing this ?

Thanks

if you write such rubbish, then forget the command prompt and forget
process explorer(which you didn't even mention).

I did try some freeware once that did what you want very easily.
Try some freeware called unlocker (i'm sure that was it)

Hi

I'm trying the 'turn off explorer.exe'

come on!!
and delete from Command Prompt
method of getting rid of some files which are polluting some folders -
it's some left overs from a SP²

as in squared?

I know what you mean, but you're not technical enough to have much
success with a technical solution
install - sp²+recycler+other stuff which
just refuses
to be thrown out.

My question is : does anyone have an idea where I can find a good site
explaining how
to use Command Prompt, how to get to the file I want to delete and how to

the command you want are CD and DEL
but it won't help you much unless you close the process that is locking
the file.
Forget that method.
If anybody is wondering, it's described here,
http://www.theeldergeek.com/delete_undeletable_file.htm
(if another process was locking it then you woudln't need to close
explorer, so wouldn't have to delete it from the command prompt. Hence
'process explorer' isn't mentioned).

As I said, forget all that.

Because you just want to delete the file and don't give a darn about
the technical aspect. That much is obvious

Just Try that freeware.

Yeh I realize it sounds like Alien, but files like 'recycler' 'system volume

and many others representing several Go the F drive are impossible to get
rid
of - I've the same where I downlaoded Windows fixes on C in a

Any othe rmeans of kicking them off the plane ?

Thanks

i'm not writing for you personally. This is a public forum. If you want
to take the advice, take it. Otherwise, it's there for somebody else
searching around, that has a similar problem. And if anybody disagrees
with what I say, I welcome it. It's good to have many solutions
mentioned and if need be, criticised.

In that case why do you need to be insulting ?

Yeh I realize it sounds like Alien,

oh, you're right. It's 1 alien. You're the alien.

I suggest you get a competent and experienced human being to have a
look at your computer Because your descriptions are completely wild.

I don't call that insulting. I call that making strong corrections.

I'd be very grateful if somebody responded to me saying " GARBAGE " and
corrected me *technically*. Rather than somebody just going along
letting me believe nonsense.

However, even though it seems to me that you are not technically
inclined. So you don't mind believing and writing nonsense. I will
still correct you, because this is a technical forum. And out of
respect, i'll treat everybody as if they are at least a bit technical.
You need to be technical to follow a forum like this.

You are diagnosing with no understanding of any technicalities, with
outrageous assumptions, with incoherent language. Your diagnosis, as
well as technical solutions you apply, are not going to be very
fruitful, because iof your lack of understanding, and communication
issues. I'm sure you will get there in the end, thanks to the diligence
of an MVP whose aim is to help you personally.
All I care about is that the problem and solution is in the thread and
that nobody reading the thread gets any technical misunderstandings.
MVPs are more interested in your welfare and that you're happy with
problem solved. Rather than you being technically able.

Whereas i'd say if you're not technically able to at least logically
explain what is going on, without me having to unravel what you're
saying, then i'm not going to be of any help to you! Because i'm not
going to play detective figuring you out, while you play detective
trying to figure your computer out.

On external drives, restore the factory original FAT32 partition.

You probably can't without destroying the operating system.
