Command Prompt won't accept command

I am trying to load an unzipped email file from the floppy drive (A) to the C
drive. When I type A:load C: in the command prompt box, I get the message
'A:load C: is not recognised as an external or internal command, operable
program or batch file'
I'm using Windows XP Home edition, McAfee security & Microsoft antispyware.
Any suggestions?

Load is not a valid XP or Command Line command. What extension does the
file have ? (.eml). Is your goal to "Copy" the file from the floppy to
permanent
storage on your disk drive or simply open the file.

Hah! The file is 'load.bat' - it should then install the whole program on
the C drive. I've tried A:\LOAD.BAT C: but still get the same response

Click Start, Run (Type) Command [Enter]
Click into Command Prompt box to give it focus
Type A: [Enter]
A:>Load [Enter]

Tried that. It opens up each of the components and for each still gives the
'is not recognised.....' response.
Sorry to be such a nuisance!

It might help to know what it is you are trying to install/access.
You said earlier it was an email. Where did you get the file or
floppy? If the last instructions didn't work, It won't help to keep
suggesting additional steps without knowing what we are trying
to get to work. If possible, edit the Load.Bat and copy & paste
the contents into a reply on the NG. Otherwise, I've got nothing
else to recommend.

Don't use the command prompt, try this...
Start | Run | Type: a:\load.bat | Click OK

or this...
Start | Run | Type: a: | Click OK |
Locate load.bat and double click it.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Thanks so much both, it hasn't entirely solved the problem but I can access
the program (albeit tediously ) from Wes's instructions. The program seems
very archaically written for this age, so perhaps I was expecting too much.
It is a program called SHROUD which is the working program to enter data for
the England & Wales National Burial Index project.
Thank you, R McCarty, for sticking with me!
