Command failed to execute for email attachments

This problem is incredibly frustrating, but what is more frustrating is that
Microsoft has absolutely no clue about it and the people on this message
board are giving the absolute worst advice, which never leads to solving the
problem.

I cannot open ANY attachments in Windows Mail after installing IE8. The
only way we can open attachments is to:
-double click the email message in the inbox.
-right click the attachment and click Save As, then save to desktop, then
open.

Before IE8, we could simply double click the attachment and it would open!
Double clicking an attachment now results in an error message "THE COMMAND
FAILED TO EXECUTE." (and then a URL link to these worthless MS communities)

I do not use ANY silly anti-virus. All I did was install IE8 and it broke
Windows Mail. Please... STOP giving people bad advice, STOP telling people
to install an entirely new program. It's 2009 and we expect software that we
paid for (Vista) to work properly. This problem demonstrates 100% why IE is
terrible because it is so entrenched into the operating system that a
seemingly simple upgrade ends up breaking apps that worked perfectly in the
past.

Also, does anyone else find that Microsofts help forums are a complete waste
of time because the people who give advice have absolutely NO CLUE what they
are talking about?

I really hesitated to reply to your posting because of this really nasty
comment which is offending the most experienced and helpful people.
And the rest if your ranting does help nobody.

You obviously get bitten by the IE8-WinMail bug which affects some
systems (all four in my environment).
There is no fix so far. Not even could be found out what is the reason
for the problem.

Only remedy: uninstalling IE8.

The problem can be reduced to JPG and TXT files with the following
workaround:
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail. Select
Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening
attachments.

What exactly is this "absolute worst advice" that you seem to agitated about?

Contrary to what you say, it is not necessary to install a new program to
fix this problem. Uninstall IE8, and IE7 is automagically back, and you
will be able to open attachments again. No big deal.

Good. Silly anti-virus software should be avoided. If however you are not
using any sane anti-virus software then I hope people ignore your advice.

I found the solution on a better website, which is way easier than your gay
solution to uninstall IE8.

-right click any Windows Mail shortcut and select properties.
-look at the Start In field and remove: %UserProfile%
-replace it with: "%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temp"
-click ok
-start Windows Mail with that fixed shortcut and BAM, you can now properly
double click & open attachments.

And yes, the morons at Microsoft are retards for not having seen this
problem before releasing IE8. Glad I paid $200 for Vista Ultimate to have no
support at all. This is why OSX is so much better. Much better than
uninstalling software or installing Windows Live Mail. pfffft.

I'll keep patting myself on the back for finding a fix that you idiots
couldn't find for 2 over months.

Wait, wait, wait. Are you serious? Helpful? Experienced? That is the
opposite of every post I've read about this issue for the last 60 days.

Linking to a KB on how to uninstall IE8 is NOT helpful. It demonstrates a
way to surpress the problem, not solve it. Telling people to "give up" and
install Windows Live Mail does NOT solve this problem.

Why does upgrading to IE8 on Microsoft's glorious "flagship" 64 bit
"ultimate" operating system break Windows Mail? Those are two completely
unrelated programs, and to make it more pathetic, they're both MS products!

This stupid "bug" is a real, genuine annoyance. The mere fact that dozens
of people are taking their valuable time to post messages about it, means
there are thousands of others who are also experiencing the problem, yet lack
the patience to write in these useless and cluttered forums. It also
reiterates the so-called experienced and helpful people in these forums lack
the basic knowledge and said experience to be of any value to this
"community."

MSFT is not likely to "fix" Windows Mail, as it's been deprecated, so if IE8
doesn't work with it, you'll need to either change from IE8 or WM.

Sorry, not really a "fix" !!
I found the solution on a better website, which is way easier than
your gay solution to uninstall IE8.

Wild you mind letting us know the website where this problems has also
been dealt with?
I spent a vast amount of time on this issue and would be interested in
what was discussed elsewhere.
-right click any Windows Mail shortcut and select properties.
-look at the Start In field and remove: %UserProfile%
-replace it with: "%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temp"
-click ok
-start Windows Mail with that fixed shortcut and BAM, you can now
properly double click & open attachments.

1.) This is not more than a workaround which works for *most* but
*not*all* file types.
The problem remains with JPG and TXT files.

2.) This workaround was posted me me app. a month ago already.
And Gary VanderMolen normally includes it in his replies.

[ranting put into the garbage can]
I'll keep patting myself on the back for finding a fix that you idiots
couldn't find for 2 over months.

I don't know whom you are addressing with "you".
It's a formal offense anyway.

Shall I now reply that you might be regarded as an "idiot" because if
shouting around to have found a fix which is (a) not a *fix* and (b) has
been published in this NG as a workaround for reducing (not solving
<!!!>) the problem dozens of times?

Pls note: Put brains into gear prior to posting in NGs and forums

So all I'm asking is ... has anybody got the answer, I have tried all the
ideas, and still can't open some most attachments. Windows Vista has been a
pain!!!

G

Gary VanderMolen

The answer for what, Mary? Your problem statement is not present in this
thread, so I have no way of knowing what you need help with.

Mary T.

CANNOT OPEN PDF ATTACHMENTS.... I have tried the remedies given and like
others it has not fixed the problem. Usually all that is necessary is to
click on the attachment and it is open, with WINDOWS VISTA this doesn't
always happen.

SINCE MY QUESTION followed a long line of the same problem, I didn't think
the question would need to be re-stated.

Mary, we are not paid for this service we simply try to help other users
with problems, and trust me, there are a LOT of other users with
problems simply because there are millions of Microsoft systems out
there. Neither me nor Gary had seen your problem stated before, perhaps
we just missed it or perhaps you posted to several groups and the
threads got mixed up, but if you have IE8 and are having problems with
email attachments the simplest answer is to go to add/remove programs
with the "Include Updates" box checked and remove IE8. Do not revisit
windows update until you have confirmed the problem has gone away.

If it goes away (and we don't want to interfere with other stuff that
was working before) then your antivirus program may be the problem.

If you don't know open IE and go tools > about, it should tell you there.

If things start to work again then turn OFF the antivirus, reboot, make
sure the Antivirus is not running and go directly to windows update and
reinstall IE8.

Please let us know how this works out or if I got this totally wrong
because this is how we help each other figure out what is going on.

Can you mention, do you use Adobe Reader for PDFs or something else.

G

Gary VanderMolen

"CANNOT OPEN PDF ATTACHMENTS"
That doesn't fully describe the problem.
What does the error message say when you try?
Are you able to save the PDF attachment, and then open the saved file outside
of Windows Mail?
Are you having similar problems with other types of attachments, such as DOC,
JPG, PPS, etc.?
Have you installed IE8 recently?

Mary said:
CANNOT OPEN PDF ATTACHMENTS....

Is it only PDFs?
How about other types of files, especially TXT and JPG?
I have tried the remedies given

Which "remedies" did you try?

Fixes for the in general PDF problem?
Uninstalling IE8?
The workaround with editing the "Start in:" field in the shortcut used
for launching WinMail?
and like others it has not fixed the problem. Usually all that is
necessary is to click on the attachment and it is open, with WINDOWS
VISTA this doesn't always happen.

As you say "not always": Does it work sometimes?
SINCE MY QUESTION followed a long line of the same problem, I didn't
think the question would need to be re-stated.

But it would really have been necessary to report on your personal
situation (incl. the error messages you receive).

Pls let us know what we need to know.
