Unfortunately this is not a fix.
The problem will re-appear pretty soon.

Just try it with TXT and JPG attachments, numerous times, doing some
normal work like browsing and opening HTML mails in between.

The length of this thread shows nothing has worked, including latest. It is
hightime for this problem to be escalated and someone in Microsoft, in the
know, look into this. You will recognize immediately an expert since such are
happy to explain and comment on the root of the problem rather than just
recommend some haphazard fix.

By all means, feel free to call or email Microsoft about it.
The responders here are not magicians, and all we can do is suggest
workarounds, since Microsoft has not released a fix.
Uninstalling IE8 is a reasonable workaround, since IE7 provides
very usable web browsing capability.

It's easy to say all that you say. Many people would appreciate anything you
can do, but if you expect a few words to make a difference then note that
that is all you are offering.

You need to follow the directions at the bottom. Windows updated yesterday
and it reset things so I followed the directions below and it worked.
I followed the above directions and restarted windows mail and I still
receive the failed to execute crap. Any other ideas that you all are finding
that might work?

Why are you complaining about the fact that some of the folks in this
group are trying to help??

We just do what we can.
So far there is not any sign that MS might even acknowledge that there
is a problem with IE8 and WinMail.

If you think that the issue should be "escalated", pls feel free to do
whatever you think to be useful.
Complaining by posting in this group where volunteers try to help other
users, for sure is not a proper way to reach the responsible people at
MS.

I recently received the "command failed to execute" message when I tried to
open an attachment on an e-mail that I had previously opened w/o problems.
Why is this? And what do I do to be able to open the attmnt once again?

When clicking an attachment and a window open that says you cannot open the
attachent, highlight and do a right click and do a "save as". Save it to the
desk top. You will be able open it. When done you can delete it or save a
copy.

This works! At least for now. I haven't UNinstalled IE8 as of yet, the
second box in the security screen is not checked (did that last time I had
this issue and it worked very temporarily) so will see if this works over
time.

If you are running IE8, uninstall it which will take you back to IE7. For
Vista users, please note IE8 is not considered a program but an update. ( Go
to the control panel, under program click on "uninstall a program" .... on
the left side in the blue panel under task, click on View installed
updates.... go to IE8 and uninstall it.)

This will fix your problem.

Emilio2000 posted on 6/8/2009 and this tip corrected the Window Mail
attachments not opening problem for me too....

Another person, named Silverhawk, came up with the correct solution (in a
different thread). It appears that an automatic update of Windows Mail
caused the link used to open Windows Mail to not work properly. Delete the
link, and then create a new one from the basic program in the Start "All
Programs" menu. Here's how Silverhawk describes it:

I noticed that if I start windows mail from
the IE8 browser, then it appears to work ok. But if I start windows mail from
the start menu, that is when I have problems. With that all said. I went to
the start menu and removed the shortcut from the start menu, then I went to
the applacation source and started the program from there, and tried it again.
And everything seems to be working fine. I then re-pinned it back into the
start menu.

To test that fix, I suggest you send yourself an email with a .TXT or
..JPG attachment.

From hussy-
Have the exact same problem- also running AGV. I have tried your suggestion-
nothing-. What can I do next?

That's a known issue that is affecting some who installed IE8.
One workaround is to uninstall IE8, which reverts you back to IE7.
Even without uninstalling IE8 you can make it work for all but TXT and
JPG attachments by doing the following:

Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the existing
value to %UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening
attachments.

If you decide to uninstall IE8 instead, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

If you don't want to do either of the above, another option is to upgrade
your email program to Windows Live Mail: http://download.live.com/wlmail
