Won't be able to solve your problem but this happened to me also while
running RC 2 x86.

I thought it was due in part to a video authoring app I installed. Since
then I've scrapped the x86 version and loaded RC2 x64. Haven't run into the
COM error since, but then I haven't loaded my video authoring app yet
either.

I had the same problem yesterday, it was so bad I had to run a fresh load.
the problem is with media player, as it is trying to create thumbnails for
your video files. The bad thing is that Vista pretty much has to make those
thumbs.
What I found is that after I re-loaded and put my Live One Care security
suite on, I downloaded 2 codec packs, DivX and XviD then I started going to
my folders to check out my movies, past that, I just gave windows enough time
to build my thumbs. Now, no "Com Surrogate" issue.
I know, sometimes it seems that everyone's answer to most issues is "Fresh
Load"
The bottom line is this, man, you got issues, and unless you have a restore
point from before the issue started, you really ain't got a choice..

Hope this helps.

thanks for the info. your thoughts on thumb nails gave me the answer. i fixed
the problem by going to folder options in control panel and checking the box
in view
options always show icons never thumbnails and opening up folders in new
window
no more com surrogate errors. i applied this to all folders.
i havent dared use wmp yet. i am using nero show time and classic media player
i got from a codec pak. no probs. i found even in xp wmp was unstable anyway.
thanks again kind regards

Hi
I have just installed K-LITE codec pack and so far have had no Com Surrogate
problems.
I`ve opened lots of avi`s in WMP11 and had no probs.

I found that the COM Surrogate Error would occur when Nero 6.6 or 7 was
installed.
