Windows XP SP2

When I installed a D-link Bluetooth adaptor in my USB port, I had install
problems. D-link had me install and uninstall their software several times.
Each time I got higher and higher port numbers. I use the Bluetooth adaptor
for GPS. I can not get USB ports less than 15 and my mapping software will
not recognize ports higher than 10. D-link says the problem is in the
registry. I am looking for a way to get back to single digit port numbers.
Any ideas?

System restore?

Can not use system restore. It would not restore previous configurations.
That problem is now fixed. I need another solution to the problem.

With your gizmo installed, go to device manager and open the
propertys of comport it has been assigned to, and click on the
advanced button. In the lower left is the comport drop down that
has comports 1 thru 256. Open the list and scroll up to the
comport you want to use, like 5. It may say it is in use (it
shouldn't be if you have nothing else connected), but just ignore
the conflict warning and chose ok. XP has a flaw where it
assigns a new comport number to USB comport port devices each
time they are plugged in.
