Com 1 come and goes

I have a device(credit card reader) on my WIN XP Pro COM1 and most of
the time it works fine. But for some reason every few days/weeks when
we start up our business in the AM the device is not found. We never
physically shut off the computer, but as I mentioned sometimes the
device isn't found when starting up the application that uses the
reader. My fix is easy, I go into device manager and delete the COM 1
port, and reboot. It seems that COM 1 is added back then, and
everything works fine, but days/weeks later we will lose the connection
again. When the connection is lost nothing shows up in device manager
that indicates that the COM 1 is not working, yet the device will not
start up until I delete the COM 1 and reboot.


Any ideas?

Go to the device's entry in Device Manager and double-click to get is
Properties. Is there a Power Management tab (might be under Advanced)?
If so, uncheck the box allowing Windows to turn off the device when not
in use.
