columns in report

Two problems in one report:
I am reporting a list of names.
(1)I would like the data (one field: "name") to print in
two columns. In 'Columns' under 'Page setup' I have set
the number of columns to 2, the column width to 1.5
inches, but the report continues to print only one
column.
(2) Some of the names appear more than once. I have set
the text box property to 'hide duplicates' , but there is
a blank space where the duplicates are hidden. I have set
the text box to 'can shrink' and the detail band to 'can
shrink'....what else can i do?

(1) Are your columns set to go Across then Down or Down then Across? Are
there enough records to fill two columns? Is you report a subreport?
(2) Hiding duplicates won't recover space. You may want to set your query to
a totals query that groups by "name".

Thank you Duane.
(1) My columns are currently set to go across then down.
I tried the down then across which seemed logical to me,
but then there was one record on each page! This is not a
subreport. I have done this before so am very puzzled as
to why it is not working now. There are enough records to
fill two columns. They are spilling onto the next page
rather than wrapping to the next column.
(2) Thanks for the query tip. I don't really care very
much if there are duplicates, i just don't want to use two
pages for material that can be printed on one page. >-----

I would check all the page settings again and possibly try create a new
report.
