Columns are dropping letters

Happy holidays, everyone. Using Word 2003, I've formatted a section into two
columns. The left column has dropped letters at the beginning of words. I
didn't see anything in help that addressed this problem. Any ideas? Thanks
much in advance for any help.

Since I can't respond to the original poster:

Michael,

It's possible to move the margins of a column left (or right) outside
of the column borders. (I've just done it myself to confirm.) Check
the ruler at the top of the page and the margin pointers for the column
you're having trouble with.

Thank you, Suzanne, but the columns seem to be well within the margins of the
81/2 X 11 portrait page I'm working on.

I thought of this, but I don't think a negative indent would cause a problem
unless the text was outside the printable area (it does in tables, but not
in newspaper-style columns unless the "outdent" exceeds the space between
columns).
